Why do we need credentials?

(I’m so glad you asked)

In the Bible, credentials serve to confirm a divine calling and establish the authority of those who speak or act on God's behalf and on the behalf of the church. While the modern term "credentials" is not used in the bible, the concept is shown through specific actions, evidence, and recognition by God or His people.

These "credentials," and this system, while they are not always formal documents,

provides proof and credibility, distinguishing legitimate messengers of God from false ones.

Biblical credentials serve to show that authority comes from God, protects against false teachings, and provides community recognition for ministers of the gospel. While the Bible mentions earthly credentials, it ultimately highlights that true credentials come from God's work in a person's life, with knowing Christ being of utmost importance.

The primary purpose of a credential is to provide official, verifiable proof of an individual's knowledge, and competence in ministry, serving as a trust signal for the church and the secular world.

The Church of God in Christ International covers its clergyman by credentialing them. Giving them the authority to preach, teach, evangelize, prophecy and perform ministerial and ecclesiastical duties in the Lord’s church. Your license, ordination, appointments and consecrations are authorized by The Church of God in Christ International.

Credentialing is our process of verifying qualifications to ensure clergymen meet specific standards.

This physical identification with your photo, name and rank assists in admittance to prisons and hospitals.

Hospitals usually ask pastors, ministers, or church leaders for ID (like a clergy badge, denominational card, or official letter) for a few main reasons:

    1.    Patient Privacy & Security (HIPAA)

Hospitals must protect patient confidentiality. Verifying clergy helps ensure that only authorized religious leaders visit patients, not strangers claiming to be clergy.

    2.    Safety of Patients & Staff

Hospitals are cautious about who enters patient rooms, especially in sensitive areas like intensive care units. Requiring clergy ID helps prevent impostors or anyone with harmful intent from getting access.

    3.    Pastoral Credentials

Most denominations issue official credentials (clergy cards, ordination papers, or church ID). Hospitals may request these to confirm the person is genuinely a pastor or recognized spiritual leader.

    4.    Special Access Privileges

Clergy are often given wider visiting privileges than regular visitors—such as visiting outside of normal visiting hours or during emergencies. ID helps hospital staff confirm they are granting these exceptions appropriately.

    5.    Hospital Chaplain Coordination

Many hospitals have their own chaplains. Verifying outside clergy helps chaplains keep track of spiritual care being provided and ensures consistency with hospital policies.

In short: It’s about verifying legitimacy, protecting patients, and complying with privacy laws.
